22/02/14 : THROUGH THE MORDOR

Day 17, Eria – Turangi (about 60km)

We wake up pretty early this morning to go to Mont Ruapehu, where is located the famous volcano named “Mont Ngauruhoe” used in the movie the "Lord Of The Ring" ; representing the Mount Doom.
Suddenly, the landscape changes, radically. Instead of finding wide green forest, the landscape turn into wide fields deprived of colors. At the back, you can have a glimpse of flat hills.
The weather is quite cloudy, which makes the atmosphere going along perfectly with the movie of Peter Jackson.
After one hour, we leave behind us this chaotic landscape. One the way to Turangi, broad woods have been replacing the uncoloured fields of Mordor.
Half an hour afterwards, we are facing an hard steep. Eventually we get to the top and we can have a first beautiful glimpse of Taupo's Lake. Moreover, we ride a very nice downhill slop until Turangi, which is really big compared to the cities we passed by so far. Turangi is located at the Southern of the Lake Taupo.
Tonight we sleep in a broad rest area where we pitch our tents.
